What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is currently the most modern and the best solution, which is used to restore a missing tooth. In short, it substitutes a missing dental root. Dental implants are most commonly made from titanium, a material that is completely biocompatible with human bones.

After placing an implant, a crown of the lost tooth is placed upon it. It is the least invasive prosthetic solution, which does not influence the structure or require preparation of adjacent teeth.

Every tooth loss is associated with serious changes within the oral cavity. The main consequence is bone atrophy, as the bone undergoes major reduction if it is not stimulated. It is visible on a patient’s face after several years, since it causes an asymmetry.

Other consequences of losing teeth:

• problems with eating; continual inflammation of the gum; frequent bleeding;
• speech disorders;
• occlusal dysfunctions, i.e. problems with occlusion, which influence temporomandibular joint system leading to major disorders, clicking, dislocations, degenerations, and headaches;
• loss of remaining teeth that protrude and become wobbly when they do not have contact with adjacent teeth;
• loss of osseous tissue that influences appearance and facial features. In the future it may be required to perform a costly bone augmentation prior to implant placement.

Given all of the above, we should not ignore any lost teeth. They have a considerable influence on the entire stomatognathic system. During the first year of a tooth loss, the bone that is not stimulated in any way disappears – even up to 70% of its volume may be lost. Hence, it is essential to place a dental implant right after a tooth was lost, so that bone loss and other major problems and costs associated with the restoration are avoided.

What can happen after an implant has been placed?

Placing an implant in a partial osseous tissue with poor blood supply is associated with a very high risk, i.e. no titanium post osseointegration in such an environment, and an implant rejection within the first three months. The lack of osseointegration is most often accompanied with an inflammatory resorption of surrounding and previously augmented osseous tissue, what is turn leads to necessary bone re-augmentation and another implant placement. It generates additional costs associated with application of materials for augmentation (xenogeneic/alloplastic materials), new dental implants, and a number of disposable materials used during a surgical procedure. With all that in mind, complications generate the need to perform other procedures of bone augmentation, nvolving the use of even more materials for bone augmentation, new implants and disposable materials.
